FAMAG Auger Bit „Lewis“

The FAMAG Auger Bits „Lewis“ are characterized by a milled helix. This kind of helix warranted the highest bending stiffness at maximum chip space. Therewith our Auger Bits are caring out the chips without problems.

Auger Bits are indispensable, if you want to drill especially deep holes in wood. They have a large coiled chip space, whereby the chipped wood are caring out to the tool shank during the drilling. In the following History we will inform you about three different auger bits, which are to differ according to the type of helix.

In the year 1909 was a auger called “Levis-Drill-Bit” (patent since 1809) illustrated in the catalogue of the company “Weiss and Sohn”. The wide difference between other auger bits was that, the auger had a coil with a free centre and one main cutting edge.

In the Year 1855 was patent another type of auger which in Germany is established as “Douglas”. It is about a Auger bit which are manufactured by twisting flat bars. It has a double-thread helix, two taper taps and two main cutting edges.

Charles Irwin received in 1884 a patent for his snake bit and created so that the third option. This drill has a round central shaft with a circular spiral. Distinctive is that the helix emanated only from a main cutting edge. The spiral of the second main cutting edge ended after a half turn. Due to this trick a very large chip space was created which transported the chips very well.

Because of the universal characteristics and the modern manufacturing techniques we can see nowadays on the local market just only milled “Lewis” Auger bits.

The FAMAG Auger Bits „Lewis“ are characterized by a milled helix. This kind of helix is warranting the highest flexural strength at maximum chip space. Therewith our Auger Bits are caring out the chips without problems. This is really important if you want to drill in deep holes and the wood fibre are trying  to give the auger a “own direction”.

The Auger bits of the type 1410 from FAMAG have one taper tap, one main cutting edge as well as a crest of thread, which is particularly suitable for soft wood and European hard wood. The mode of operation is similar to the Forstner Bit: First the taper tap will pre-cut the wood fibre of the outer cross ring, then the main cutting edge will do the main work. FAMAG Auger bit “Lewis”  is used by carpenter, automatic carpentry machine and everywhere who people needs to drill deep holes. The shafts are manufactured with a hexanal shank, in order to avoid that the shaft “twist” in the machine. (from diameter 10mm).

We have five different standard length available from stock: 235mm, 320mm, 460mm, 650mm and 1.000mm. According to requirements we can produce custom-made product; either favourable with a longer shaft or with a extra long helix. The maximal total length which we can produce is until 2.500mm and are more and more common.
We are producing our auger bits from a diameter of 5mm to 50mm as standard (the total length of 1.000mm not till then Ø 14mm). The biggest diameter we could produce as custom-mad product is 80mm.

We are offering besides our 130 different diameters (in different length) five several sets in the most marketable diameters. We have a set of eight pieces in the diameters (Ø 6, 8, 10. 12. 14, 16, 18 and 20mm) and the total of length 235mm and a set of six pieces in the diameters ( Ø 10, 12, 14, 16, 18 and 20mm) in the length 235, 320, 460 and 650mm.

It is necessary to use a special auger drill if you want to work with hard wood. More detailed information will be forthcoming but if you need this information urgently, do not hesitate to call us! We would be glad to inform you!

Please contact our engineering department, if you haven’t found a suitable drill in our product range. They will help you and to create a drill according to your demand.
