Drilling and countersinks in hardwood we do it so...

The carbide tipped drill bit 1593:

The task of drilling exotic and extremely hard wood species places very specific and extreme demands on the tools used. Twist drills are very suitable for deep drilling due to their geometry, but in the hardest woods heat can build up rapidly at the cutting face leading to premature dulling and inaccuracy. This problem is exacerbated when low-quality tools are used, but even very hard and sharp HSS tools can reach their limits under certain conditions.

We know from experience that when drilling in hardwood, the chips tend to break “short“. These hardwood chips have a significantly smaller volume than soft wood chips. Completely different tasks are imposed on the geometry of the spiral of a hardwood drill compared to drills which are designed to work in softwood, examine the flutes of a Lewis Auger for example.

For the specific demands of drilling hardwood we have created a new carbide tipped woodworking drill bit: the FAMAG 1593 series. The ‘Type N’ spirals are ground with a very steep slope. Twin flutes without a back guide provide minimal friction in the bore and thus considerably reduce heat generation in the drill bit and the release of resins from the timber. The steep helix ensures that hardwood chips are ejected quickly from the drill bit, preventing debris build up and eliminating a second potential source of friction.

Carbide is insensitive to heat and is well suited for cutting exotic hardwoods. Our new CNC machine – built especially for the task – forms the spurs, centre point and two main cutting edges of the new bits. With this overall geometry, careful material selection, and precision manufacturing process, the new 1593 TCT drills are perfect for the working of European and exotic hardwoods, they also perform superbly on hard coatings, chipboard, laminate and hard plastics like Corian.

The 1593 TCT wood drill is available in sizes from 3.0 mm - 12.0 mm and can be ordered in sets or individually:

Article number: 1593.805:

5 pieces in blister with the Ø 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8 mm

Article number: 1593.507:

7 pieces in high-quality wooden box with Ø 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10 and 12 mm

Article number: 1593.510:

10 pieces in high-quality wooden box with Ø 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 mm

The VARIO-Countersink 2202:

High quality carbide tips make VARIO the perfect partner for 1593 TCT drills.

Everyone knows the problem: When drilling and making countersinks in wood – in one operation - the appropriate countersink is not at hand. Or a hole must be drilled with an intermediate size for which there is no standard countersink. This is where the FAMAG carbide tipped VARIO countersink excels since you can mount variable twist drills of Ø 3 mm to Ø 8 mm. The tool consists of two half shells which are fastened by means of two clamping screws on the drill.

Application:

The countersink is simply mounted on the drill.  The cut-outs on the inside of the countersinks ensure that the countersink remains axially aligned with the drill. After having adjusted the drill length you simply fix the countersink using two hexagon socket screws on the drill.

Cheaper versions typically clamp with only one screw, acting on the spiral groove of the drill. This often causes poor concentricity with small drill diameters. Our concentric twin shell design, and the carbide tips, are what makes the FAMAG VARIO countersink fundamentally different.

You can order the VARIO-countersink individually:

Article number: 2202.000
VARIO 90 'Countersink HM adjustable for 90 ° sinkings

Article number: 2204.000
VARIO 180 'Countersink HM adjustable for 180 ° sinkings

Combined set
We are delighted to offer these high performance carbide tipped tools together, in a beautiful wooden boxed set, at an absolutely attractive special price.

The set consists of the VARIO-countersink 90 °, and the 1593 series TCT-Wood twist drills in diameters 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8 mm. The combined set comes in a high quality fitted wooden presentation box (incidentally, also made in Germany!).
