FAMAG Auger Bit „Lewis“

Auger Bits are indispensable if you want to drill especially deep holes in wood. They have a large coiled chip space, whereby the chipped wood is transported to the tool shank during the drilling. In history we find three different auger bits, which are different in the helix type.

In the year 1909 an auger called “Levis-Drill-Bit” (patent since 1809) was illustrated in the catalogue of the company “Weiss and Sohn”. The wide difference between other auger bits was that the auger had a coil with a free centre and one main cutting edge.

In the Year 1855 another type of auger which in Germany is established as “Douglas” was patented. It is an auger bit which is manufactured by twisting flat bars. It has a double-thread helix, two taper taps and two main cutting edges.

Charles Irwin received a patent for his auger bit and created the third option in 1884 that way. This drill has a round central shaft with a circular spiral. Distinctive is that the helix was only emanated from a main cutting edge. The spiral of the second main cutting edge ended after a half turn. Due to this trick a very large chip space was created which transported the chips very well.

Thanks to the universal characteristics and the modern manufacturing techniques we can find nowadays only milled “Lewis” Auger bits in the local markets.

The FAMAG Auger Bits „Lewis“ are characterized by a milled helix. This kind of helix guarantees the highest flexural strength at maximum chip space. Due to this our Auger Bits are carrying out the chips without problems. This is really important if you want to drill in deep holes and the wood fibres are trying to give the auger an “own direction”.

The Auger bits type 1410 from FAMAG have a taper tap, one main cutting edge as well as a crest of thread, which is particularly suitable for soft wood and European hard wood. The way of operation is similar to the Forstner Bits: First the taper tap will pre-cut the wood fibre of the outer cross ring and then the main cutting edge will do the main work. FAMAG Auger bit “Lewis” is used by carpenters, automatic carpentry machine and everywhere where people need to drill deep holes. The shafts are manufactured with a hexagonal shank (from diameter 10 mm up) in order to avoid that the shaft “twists” in the machine.

We have five different standard lengths in stock: 235 mm, 320 mm, 460 mm, 650 mm and 1.000 mm. According to requirements we can produce custom-made products; either favourable with a longer shaft or with an extra long helix. The maximal total length is 2.500 mm and gets more and more common.

We are producing our auger bits from a diameter of 5 mm to 50 mm as standard (the total length of 1.000mm from Ø 14mm up). The biggest diameter we are able to produce as custom-made product is 80 mm.

In October we can proudly present you two Lewis sets in a wooden box of Classic line 1414. The difference to the pro line 1410 is that we only harden the tool head. This has a huge price impact.

Look forward to two sets with total lengths of 320 mm and 460 mm. In a wooden box (of course Made in Germany) you’re going to find 8 different diameters: 10/12/14/16/18/20/22 and 24 mm.

We are offering five different sets in the most used diameters besides our 130 different diameters (in different lengths). We have a set of eight pieces in the diameters (Ø 6/8/10/12/14/16/18 and 20 mm) and the total of length 235 mm and a set of six pieces in the diameters (Ø 10/12/14/16/18 and 20 mm) in the lengths 235, 320, 460 and 650 mm.
